Wellington County Museum & Archives Children's Play Space

The Children’s Play Space at the Wellington County Museum & Archives (WCMA) welcomes families into a bright immersive environment designed to support connection, creativity, and everyday moments of learning through play.

Created for children aged three and up, the space transformed a former second-floor gallery into an interactive interior landscape. It features a treehouse, performance stage, campground elements, and nature-themed installations inspired by the Grand River and local wildlife, inviting movement, imagination, and hands-on discovery through activities like pretend fishing and cooking. Design interventions such as increased ceiling height, uncovered windows, and exposed historic stone walls bring light and texture into the space, grounding playful experiences within the museum’s heritage setting.

The project reflects close collaboration between WCMA, Wellington County, Blue Rhino Design (interior design), and MSS (architecture), united by a shared focus on creating interiors that support curiosity, accessibility, and long-term community use.

By creating a space that celebrates learning through play, and encourages multi-generational connections, the WCMA continues to make history engaging and accessible to families across Wellington County.
