Region of Waterloo Courthouse Renovations

Martin Simmons Sweers oversaw the transformation of the interior of this heritage courthouse into modern offices for regional staff. The result is an attractive, welcoming workspace that meets contemporary accessibility and indoor air quality requirements.

The new facility includes open and enclosed offices, meeting rooms, upgraded washrooms, lunch and coffee areas as well as a portion of the Regional Archives. Many interior partitions were removed; mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded, as were the elevators, wall and roof insulation and windows. The existing second floor double-height courtrooms were filled in to create more office area on the third floor and the steel structure was upgraded to meet current codes.

The upgrades met AODA (accessibility) requirements and included the removal of environmentally hazardous materials.

The Waterloo County Courthouse was originally designed by Snider, Huget & Associates.
